What to eat in Guangzhou? I have no idea too at first.. search in openrice but it just seems too many things to eat and the foodie places are all scattered around. So basically I just explore the place myself.. observed what locals normally eat, make a few guangzhou friends and figured out what are the must eat in town.. so this is what i’ve got.. Hope it helps for your future travel to Guangzhou~ And I thought I gonna slim down this trip because I thought Guangzhou food is just so so.. who knows.. muahhahaha! Proudly brought back extra 3KG! Lalalala!
1. Wanton Noodles/ Dumplings Noodles 云吞面
I’ve tried more than 5 stalls selling wanton noodles.. the best I would say is this one.. from the shop called ” Di Yi Mien” 第壹面 . Soup is clear and flavourful. Noodles are good and wanton is excellent. Burst right into your mouth awakening all your palate.
2. Rice Rolls 肠粉
They have rice rolls at almost every corner of Guangzhou. Wide selections of flavours from the normal prawn rice rolls to pork liver rice rolls to two meat rice rolls to even fried rice rolls. The famous one — “Ngan kei Rice Rolls” 银记肠粉店
3. Boat Porridge 艇仔粥
Its famous. The significant one will be Liwan boat porridge 荔湾艇仔粥.. so far I haven’t had a good one so no recommendation for this. 🙁
4. Roasted Goose 烧鹅
Roasted Goose is popular in China and Hongkong but its very rare in Malaysia.. So do pay a visit to try on their roasted goose! “Tai Heng” 太兴 one is famous but very very long queue! The other will be “Mr Goose Restaurant” 鹅仔酒家, its a chain restaurant for roasted goose but too bad it was closed 2 days consecutively when I was around.
5. Braised Beef Offal 牛杂
I realised Guangzhou people love their cows… there are plenty of stalls selling braised beef offals.. its all over the place… from the price of RMB 6 to RMB 30. Choose your own preferences.
6. Dim Sum (Xiao Long Bao) 点心（小龙包）
Try their old school dim sums.. try the improved version of dim sums.. I like their xiao long bao because they have these very special and interesting fillings… This one.. particularly is the crab roe xiao long bao! slurps!
7. Double skin Milk 双皮奶
I have no idea what it is at first.. and even now I m not sure what exactly it is.. All i can describe is that.. its a milk dessert.. the texture is like mashed pudding. Very heavy texture but smooth. Very dense. Taste like.. between milk and a pudding..
8. Spring Onion Noodles 油葱面
Unlike the noodles in Malaysia… They are extremely generous in the fried spring onions. Yums!
9. Stew Soup 焞汤
Stew soup become one of the comfort food during winter.. Surprisingly.. I can feel their sincerity in all the soups i had in Guangzhou.. they are very serious about their soup. The flavour is very spot on.. its like they put a lot of effort in it! Good! 很有诚意的汤
10. Vegetables 青菜
Surprised to say… All the vegetables I had in Guangzhou is very gigantic in size and very sweet in flavour. Or is it because of winter? One of the best thing I had is their Vegetables.. very very fresh and sweet. And the size of the vegetables.. you can see it for yourselves, triple the size of the vege here! Hohoho! Happy!
11. Boiled spicy beef 水煮牛
I told you they love their cows.. the beef slices is beyond excellent. So fat so juicy and so tender.. but the focus point come back to the boiled spicy base. Tonnes of dried chillies and chilli oil.. it taste very appetizing at first.. especially when it comes together with the rice.. but after a few mouth… your tongue will go really numb… but you will still dig for more.. Thats what you call — Addictive!
12. Beef Balls 牛肉丸
My first encounter of good beef balls is at “Sheng Kei” 成记 some Canton restaurant in BeiJing Road Pedestrian. How do I describe.. its juicy or isit oily in the center when I bite it.. Its not only moist.. its smooth…! I tried some other balls at the other places in Guangzhou but nothing beats the one at “sheng kei”. 成记
13. Rice Noodles/Ho Fun 河粉
An everyday food for the Guangzhou people.. Nothing to shout about but well, just give it a try while you are there. They claimed to be different but I’ve yet to try one. 🙂
14. Wong Lou Kat 王老吉
You can see this almost every corner in Guangzhou!
